Founded by Robert Vernon, Book Design and Print is your premier source for book editing, design and printing. Robert has been involved in book design and production since the mid 1980s. He was the founder of Digital World Images in Denver, a premier color separation and pre-press company, C2 Media based in New York, a leading digital printing company, Digital Arts Imaging, an interior decor and event company and now, Book Design and Print.

Design

We love books and we love designing them! Our team will get on a call with you to discuss your ideas and thoughts about your book before we do anything else. Once we have a clear idea about your vision for your book we will start the design process. Our process is simple; we come up with multiple ideas for the design of your book. You will receive several different designs for your cover, chapter heads and text pages. After we have received your feedback and thoughts we refine our designs and send them to you. This may go on for several rounds to get it just right. Once we have the design agreed upon, we start laying the book out.

If you have digital photos we check the files for resolution, color and size. We will color correct the images if necessary and put them into the layout. If you have art or photos that need scanning, we do that for you. Once the text, art and photos are in place, we send you pdf proofs to look at. After receiving the proofs and receiving comments from you, we make any corrections needed and send revised proofs to you. The final step is hard copy proofing of the dust jacket or cover and a few representative pages for you to approve.

Upon approval, your book goes to press! We ship to the destination of your choice and your book is born!

Printing

We print textbooks, coffee table books and everything in-between with a wide range of sizes, covers and finishes to suit your needs. Whether you want a soft cover, hard cover, short run, long run, we have you covered. Your book is printed on the press best suited for the type of book you want. Color, black and white or on demand, we have your back.

Here are our recommended book sizes;

Portrait orientation – between 4″ x 5″ to 4″ x 6″

Landscape orientation – between 8.5” x 5.5” and 12” x 9”

Square orientation – between 6″ x 6″ minimum

FAQ

What is the minimum quantity of books I can order?

If your book is printed digitally, 1-200. We print offset for quantities over 200.

How do I get my book copyrighted?

To copyright your book, go to www.copyright.gov

How do I get an ISBN and a barcode for my book?

To purchase your ISBN, go to isbn.org. They also offer barcodes.

What kind of paper do you offer?

We will suggest papers to you once we have talked to you about your project. There are many factors that affect paper choice; color photos or art, purpose of the book, budget, etc.

What are my binding options?

We offer the following binding options; Smyth Sewn & Case Binding, Perfect Binding, Saddle Stitch, Wire-O Binding, Spiral Bound among others. Your total page count and the purpose of the book will enter into the decision of what binding to use. We will discuss that
in detail with you and choose the best binding for your book.

What resolution should my photos be?

Your color photos and art should be 300dpi, CMYK. Grayscale photos should be 8bit grayscale at 300dpi.Line art scans should be 1000dpi. We will pre-flight all supplied images and if there are any issues with them we will let you know.

Can I get a pdf of my book when the design is finished?

We will be glad to send you a pdf of your book when complete.

Can you quote shipping?

We will be glad to quote your shipping once the size, paper, page count, binding and destination are determined. We gladly give you several different options for shipping.

What is your typical turnaround time?

For design and layout 3 to 4 weeks. If we are editing the book as well add 2 to 4 weeks. Printing will take approximately 4 weeks.
